In the classroom: Research includes helping build a home

A group of students in Dr. Heather Dixon-Fowler's Social Entrepreneurship class recently completed a project for Habitat for Humanity. Enrolled in Appalachian's Hickory program, they did research by spending a Saturday helping to build a house. They put siding on an entire side of the building. Walker alumna rings closing bell at NASDAQ

One of the newest companies added to the NASDAQ rang in its debut on the stock market listing. Literally. Suzanne DeFerie '79 ACC, CEO of ASB Bancorp, Inc., rang the closing bell to end trading Monday. The event marked the company's addition to the exchange back in October. ASB Bancorp is beleived to be the first Asheville-based company to enjoy the honor. Karen Thomas, regional sales manager for the North, South and Central America for Bloomberg L.P, will be the speaker for commencement ceremonies Dec. 18 at Appalachian State. Thomas is a 1990 graduate of Appalachian.
