Two Walker College alumni join Appalachian’s foundation board James K. Reaves '93 FIN and C. Hunter Widener '95 MGT were among four new members recently elected to the Appalachian State University Foundation Board of Directors. They joined Jane M. Edmisten of Washington, D.C. and Charlene W. COB professor awarded top state tourism award Dr. J. Dana Clark, professor of management within Walker College, was awarded the Charles Parker Award for Tourism Excellence during the fall 2012 meeting of the North Carolina Tourism Leadership Conference in Raleigh.This annual award is conferred for outstanding contributions to the development of the travel industry of North Carolina. Faculty Research: Gauging ethics and spirituality in business schools An ethical scenario to consider. A person bought a new car from a franchised automobile dealership in the local area. Eight months after the car was purchased, he began having problems with the transmission. He took the car back to the dealer, and some minor adjustments were made. Study Abroad: Senior prepares for life in Asia Walker College provides its students with several opportunities to study overseas, many during the summer months. One such program begins this week, when 15 students leave for a five-week stay in Asia. For senior Tyler Norwood, it's also the beginning of an even longer educational stint. In the classroom: Research includes helping build a home Posted on Dec 20, 2011 in A group of students in Dr. Heather Dixon-Fowler's Social Entrepreneurship class recently completed a project for Habitat for Humanity. Enrolled in Appalachian's Hickory program, they did research by spending a Saturday helping to build a house. They put siding on an entire side of the building. During his October 26 visit Conway discussed the founding and growth of Golden Cockerel, a small business that is based jointly in Boone, North Carolina and St. Petersburg, Russia. Faculty Research: The power of networking to build success Earlier this year a research paper co-authored by Walker College management professor Rick Cotton explored the themes in 62 Major League Baseball Hall of Fame speeches. The study, “On Becoming Extraordinary: The Content and Structure of the Developmental Networks of Major League Baseball Hall of Famers," found the larger the base of a player's support, whether from family or friends, the more successful that player was. Walker College alumnus named CEO of Yadkin Valley Financial Corporation Joseph H. Towell '74 ECON '78 MBA has been named CEO with Yadkin Valley Financial Corporation. He had been the acting President and Chief Operating Officer.
