Housed in the Walker College's Office of the Dean for Graduate Programs and Research and guided by a professional education advisory committee, the program is closely aligned with the college's mission to deliver transformational educational experiences that prepare and inspire individuals to be ethical, innovative, and engaged business leaders. Program faculty include PhD experts in the fields of Accounting, Economics, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Human Resource Management, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology.

Program content possibilities include Executive Leadership, Design ThinkingIT Project ManagementLeadership Fundamentals, Lean Six Sigma, Managerial Finance, Personnel ManagementSales and Marketing, Strategic Management and Supply Chain Management.

Customized Programs

The Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University offers professional education programs to develop leadership skills and abilities in the regional business community.  Addressing specific, real-work challenges, the college's professional education program delivers content through flexible, short-term opportunities for professionals and managers. Designed to give client organizations a competitive advantage, the program allows industry professionals the same transformational experiences afforded to Appalachian's undergraduate and graduate students, but with customizable content and tailored format. Program duration can be day-long or multi-week, depending on what best suits the company. Programs may be geared toward certificate programs.

Appalachian's business professional education programs are PhD-led courses; the faculty members possess advanced business and management knowledge in their respective business disciplines. 

Dinesh Dave

Supply Chain Management Professor Dinesh Dave holds a Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma. His teaching and research activities are centered in supply chain management, production and operations management, quantitative methods and techniques, business statistics, and information technology.  Dr. Dave serves as Director at large for APICS-The Association for Operations Managers, Foothills Chapter, and is a board member of the Charlotte Roundtable of Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).


Mark LewisMark Lewis

Management professor Mark Lewis is an innovation expert and business strategist with a passion for business research that leads to actionable insights. His research is aimed at an executive audience and based on engagements with industry leaders in the logistics, diversified computer systems, and healthcare industries. This work has appeared in MIS Quarterly Executive, MIT Supply Chain Strategy, and other leading outlets, and his case study on innovation in a long-term outsourcing relationship has been used by over 10,000 students in 29 countries.


Chris McNeilChris McNeil

Finance, Banking & Insurance professor Chris McNeil teaches corporate finance and has previously taught international finance and financial modeling in Excel.  His research is focused on corporate finance and development of Excel pedagogical tools.  Dr. McNeil worked for ten years in industry (BB&T and Duke Energy) before entering the Ph.D. program at the University of South Carolina.  He joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in 2004.


David Shows Appalachian State UniversityDavid Shows

Marketing professor David Shows teaches sales management, marketing principles, marketing strategy, and integrated marketing communications.   His research is focused upon entrepreneurism and entrepreneurial marketing.  Dr. Shows' industry experience includes being a systems analyst with Citizens Bank and being managing partner and founder of ZZip Internet, one of the first Internet providers. He has international teaching experience at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, South Korea.
