About Lean Six Sigma

The Lean Six Sigma approach to process quality provides organizations with a consistent methodology and common terminology for continuous improvement. It combines best methods today to improve quality, speed, productivity, and cost. This teaches how to effectively integrate quality, infrastruction, and problem solving abilities associated with Six Sigma with speed, capacity, and flexibility of lean methods for productive results. 

The Lean Six Sigma professional education program offered by Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business instructs business professionals in using Lean Six Sigma methodologies to solve complex business problems and identify improvement opportunities. 

Learning Outcomes

Program participants will return to their organizations with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Become familiar with concepts of Lean, Six-Sigma, and Quality Management
  • Apply Lean, Six-Sigma, and Quality Management methodologies and tools including DMAIC, DMADV, Root Cause Analysis, Statistical Process Control, and others.
  • Integrate business performance management with Lean Six Sigma methodologies
  • Assist in leading departmental projects to higher performance
  • Become effective team members for key cross-functional projects
  • Bring about measurable improvements in customer satisfaction, product quality, and profitability
  • Participate in mission-critical transformational change initiatives that create sustainable corporate value

About the Instructor

Dinesh DaveDr. Dinesh S. Davè is the department chair and a professor in the Department of Marketing & Supply Chain Management in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. He served as the director of Supply Chain, the director of Center for Business Research, and held the Beroth Oil Four Brothers Professorship. Dr. Davè has designed and introduced Lean, Six-Sigma and Quality Management course at both undergraduate and graduate levels at Appalachian. He has been teaching this course for over a decade, and he is Lean Six Sigma certified. His teaching and research activities have been in the areas of Lean, Six-Sigma and Quality Management, Supply Chain/Operations Management, Quantitative Methods & Techniques, Analytical Models, Business Statistics, and Information Technology.  Dr. Davè has published numerous research articles in a variety of reputable journals. He is also active in providing leadership to professional organizations.

Green Belt

Program attendees can earn a Green Belt Educational Certificate of Completion from the Walker College of Business by first completing the Yellow Belt program, and then attending an additional 30-hour Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program over 4 Saturdays. Learners attending the Green Belt program will benefit by a bonus statistics course built into program content. Learners are required to attend class and complete assigned homework. Learners will demonstrate their proficiency through an examination.

Yellow Belt*
*If attendees received a Yellow Belt Certification anywhere other than Appalachian State University, a copy of the certificate must be provided to professional@appstate.edu.

Black Belt

Program attendees can earn a Black Belt Educational Certificate of Completion from the Walker College of Business by first attending the Yellow and Green Belt programs and then attending the 3-day Black Belt program. Learners are required to attend class and participate in an approved Black Belt project.
