A group of MBA students, faculty members and administrators in Appalachian’s Walker College of Business participated in an 8 day  study abroad program to Cuba that focused on sustainability and the effects of the U.S. embargo on Cuban society. The group attended lectures at the University of Havana's Economic Research Center and at the University of Pinar del Rio.

The short-term study abroad program was possible following action by the Obama Administration in January that authorized short term  educational visits to the island . It was the first study-abroad trip to Cuba offered by the university since 2004 when travel permits for short-term educational programs were cancelled by the Bush Administration.
