Portugal - Tradition & Transition: Industry, Culture, & Sustainability in Portugal - MBA 5020

Program Dates
Sunday, May 9, 2027 to Sunday, May 23, 2027
Description

A study of the role of business and sustainability in Portugal. The country is a small, open, export-oriented economy whose best-known industries have been shaped by centuries of trade, family enterprise, and geography. Through four pre-trip seminars and a two-week field experience, students analyze the industries that define Portuguese commerce (cork, wine, maritime operations, tourism, and tile), examine how national culture shapes business practice, and evaluate the sustainability claims and trade-offs of heritage and emerging sectors.

Working with local organizations and hosts, students learn in the field: a cork museum, a port cellar and a Vinho Verde estate, a maritime museum and a contemporary museum built from a former power station, a tile museum with a hands-on workshop, a forest-conservation nonprofit, a social enterprise led by migrant guides, a startup campus, and conversations with Portuguese academics and practitioners.
