United Kingdom - Resilience & Sustainability in Edinburgh & Yorkshire - BUS 4055/MBA 5020

Program Dates
Wednesday, June 2, 2027 to Thursday, June 10, 2027
Description

This immersive program explores risk, resilience, and sustainability, with a special focus on the special areas of historic significance in and around Edinburgh, Scotland and Yorkshire, England in the United Kingdom (UK). Preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of the built environment (particularly the large segment having historical significance) as well as land use policy and new construction all have implications for infrastructure planning and management, tourism, cultural preservation, and economic-environmental resilience / sustainability. Students in this course experience the Capitol of Scotland - Edinburgh - and its surrounds as well as the heritage area of Yorkshire, England during their travel. While on campus, the coursework examines the UK's risk and the economics, finance, and insurance of how resilience is pursued. A unique international learning journey takes students to sites in the areas in and around Edinburgh, Scotland, the medieval town of York, England and dramatic Yorkshire villages (e.g. Askrigg, Harrogate, Hull, Wensleydale, Grassington). These visits are centered on appreciation for the cultural, economic and heritage importance as well as the resource challenges faced in reliably managing the risks to the area's resilience and sustainability. The emphasis of the course is on awareness and appreciation of cultural differences in the United States and the United Kingdom, strategy-oriented definition of the resilience and sustainability problems unique (or special) to Northern England and the Scottish Lowlands, active open-minded thinking about potential solutions, and expository styles that communicate recommendations for optimal impact.
