7 earn top scores on first Fall 2025 Excel challenge

The first competition of this semester’s Walker College of Business Excel Challenge, designed to test students' mastery of Microsoft Excel and essential problem-solving skills for the business world, took place September 23, with seven top-performing students.

  3. Ashley Meacham (Masters in Accounting)
  4. Kyle Kaufman (Accounting, Economics, Finance & Banking)
  5. Connor Perdue (Masters in Business)
  6. John Linville (Accounting, Risk Management & Insurance)
  7. Graham Gainey (International Business)

The students excelled in a series of increasingly complex, timed tasks.

“These competitions reinforce the college’s commitment to building career-ready business skills, said Dr. Chris McNeil, who helps coordinate the competitions for the Walker College. "The ability to master complex spreadsheet analysis is a valuable skill in today's data-driven economy."

Dr. Jeff Kaleta and Tori Humler also worked with the students.

"The students’ success underscores the high level of technical proficiency being cultivated within the college,” they added.

The Walker College of Business Excel Challenge is a series of competitions that encourages students to go beyond classroom learning, to hone and test their analytical skills in a competitive, real-world scenario.

Upcoming opportunities to compete

The next Walker Excel Challenge will be held Tuesday, October 28 at 8:00 p.m. It is online and lasts 30 minutes.

Competition tasks are not specific to any specific area of study; students of all majors are invited to participate and compete for prizes.

App State will also participate in the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge Team Semi-Finals in Las Vegas on December 2.
