Members of Appalachian State University’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), an international honor society for students and professionals in accounting, finance, and information systems, attended the annual BAP meeting in Orlando, Florida, in July.
During the conference, senior accounting major Matthew Buie participated in Project Run With It, a BAP-sponsored competition designed to further the organization's community service component and provide student members with an opportunity to engage in a real-world consulting project.
Buie’s team won first place in the case competition.
The team included students from App State, the University of Nebraska, Elon University, and the University of Washington.
The students were presented with a case from Quest, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that provides services to increase capabilities and quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. They were asked to provide Quest’s social venture Blossom, which offers artisanal products handcrafted by individuals with developmental disabilities, a viable path for growing their business appropriately.
“The team worked from approximately 6 PM Wednesday to 1 AM Thursday and then again from 6 AM Thursday to 2 PM before submitting their recommendations,” explained Dr. Brian Hasson, an assistant professor of accounting at App State and the team’s faculty advisor. “The team then presented the recommendations on Friday morning to a judging panel made up of a faculty advisor, a partner from the sponsoring firm, Moss Adams, and leadership from the NFP.”
App State’s BAP chapter will receive a plaque and a $1,000 monetary award for the achievement.
