App State senior wins RIMS ERM Student Video Competition

Appalachian State University student Matthew Scott has won the 2020 RIMS ERM Student Video Competition.

Scott, a senior from Huntersville, North Carolina, is double-majoring in risk management and insurance (RMI) and supply chain management (SCM) in Appalachian's Walker College of Business.

The video competition was part of the 2020 RIMS ERM Virtual Conference, held November 4-5, 2020. RIMS is a risk management society of 10,000 professionals from 60 countries that promotes the profession of risk management. The annual conference offers real-world education from practitioners to strengthen member enterprise risk management (ERM) programs.

Scott's award-winning video discussed two emerging issues in the industry: environmental, social and governments (ESG) and diversity and inclusion.

According to Jamie Parson, Associate Professor within the Department of Finance, Banking & Insurance and member of the College's Diversity & Inclusion team, who works with Scott and fellow students at Appalachian, the insurance industry has made significant developments in supporting the movement toward creating more diverse and inclusive workplaces.

"It was important for me to note the great steps the risk management industry has taken in order to address diversity," said Scott. "[These risks] are extremely crucial for a firm to get a handle upon, now as the world is moving to a much more climate friendly state. Therefore, investment decisions will take ESG metrics into heavy consideration."

Scott was able to think critically about his intended industry thanks in part to a variety of engaging experiences at Appalachian.

Scott has completed two summer internships, traveled extensively as an officer in the App State Gamma Iota Sigma Rho chapter, represented the Walker College of Business and the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center in industry competitions, participated in the AppRISE student research team and served as a Walker Fellow.

He plans to graduate from Appalachian in May 2021 and has already accepted a position as a risk analyst with Guy Carpenter near Atlanta, Georgia.
