Barnes student research program is accepting grant applications

The Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University is accepting applications to its Barnes Student Research Grant Program.

The Barnes grants provide $1,000 to support research with a faculty mentor outside the normal classroom experience. The program strengthens hands‑on learning, builds research skills, and supports faculty‑student collaboration.

The research may take place in a formal setting, such as in an hourly position as a research assistant or during a 1-hour independent study course. The research may also take place in less formal settings, such as a student club activity. Research projects may lead to student poster or oral presentations at on- and off-campus conferences, and to papers co-authored by the student and a faculty mentor, which may be submitted for publication in a professional/academic outlet.

Grants are funded by the Lee Barnes Benefaction for Learning Enhancement and Enrichment. Lee Barnes '90 is the president and director of M.M. Fowler Inc.

Apply by March 2

Given the speed at which the world changes, students must learn to adapt constantly. While the traditional classroom setting plays an important role, it may be complemented with other approaches that fully develop students' adaptive capabilities and enhance readiness for an ever-changing world. To reach this goal, the Walker College supports project-based applied research and learning opportunities through partnerships with external entities, encourages research collaboration across departments, campus, and other institutions, and promotes student involvement in faculty-led research.
