Business students earned top honors during 2017 Celebration of Leadership and Legacy Award Ceremony

Business students earned top honors during the 2017 Celebration of Leadership and Legacy Award Ceremony, hosted by Appalachian State University's Office of Student Development.

The annual event recognizes students for their service and leadership to the university. Awards presented included the Ronny L. Brooks Leadership Award, the Bobby L. Dunnigan Service Award, the Gregory S. Blimling Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Student Development, the Outstanding Student Employee of the Year, the Berardino DiBernardi Student Award for Leadership and Legacy and the W. H. Plemmons Leadership Medallion Award.

MauldinSenior accounting major Jonathan Mauldin, pictured left, earned the W. H. Plemmons Leadership Medallion. Mauldin, who is from Lumberton, NC, is a Walker Fellow and led Presidents' Roundtable for the college during the 2016-17 academic year. Mauldin has also served as President of Club Council, the university's governing body for clubs and organizations. He is a past recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award, and a W.H. Plemmons Fellow at Appalachian. 

The Plemmons Medallion, named in honor of Dr. William H. Plemmons who served as the Appalachian's second president from 1955 to 1969, was established by the university's Board of Trustees in 1996. The award recognizes the time, energy, skills, and commitment of students, faculty, student development educators and staff who exceed their peers in providing leadership that enriches the quality of student life and advances the education of students. A list of past winners is available online. Senior health promotion major John Martin "Jamal" Peters also earned a 2017 Plemmons Medallion.

Senior marketing major Jae Amoah and senior economics and finance and banking major Hollie Brown earned Ronny L. Brooks Leadership Awards.

Amoah

Amoah, pictured right, has served on the Chancellor's Student Advisory Board for Diversity Recruitment, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and the NPHC Sororities and Diversity Scholars. She is certified as a BB&T Emerging Leader.

BrownBrown, pictured left, is a Walker Fellow, a member of the Broyhill Fellows, and a member and the annual report editor for the Bowden Investment Group. At Appalachian, she has served as Panhellenic President and a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority

The Brooks Award recognizes Appalachian students who have distinguished themselves through their exemplary leadership provided to Appalachian students, programs and organizations.

HarveySenior accounting major Ashlee Harvey, pictured right, was recognized as outstanding student employee of the year for her work with Appalachian's Food Services. Harvey is a business honors student, a member of Beta Alpha Psi and AIESEC, and she won the 2016 Walker College of Business Leadership Case Competition.

The other 2017 honorees were Ty White, Student Organization Presidential Award; Maryjoe Lezema, Jackie White, Lee Pinkham, and Jacqueline "Riley" Dixon, Bobby L. Dunnigan Service Awards; Erin Parrish, Gregory S. Blimling Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Student Development; and Katherin Castillo, Berardino DiBernardi Student Award for Leadership and Legacy. Sigma Nu and Student Veteran's Association were named Student Organizations of the Year.
