Department chairs named in Walker College of Business

Todd Cherry has been named chair of the Department of Economics and James Stoddard has been named chair of the Department of Marketing in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University, effective July 1, 2017.

In addition, Dinesh DavéDelbert Goff and Doug Roberts–each of whom served as an interim department chair during the 2016-17 academic year–have been named chairs in the Departments of Computer Information Systems & Supply Chain Management; Finance, Banking & Insurance; and Accounting, respectively.

They join Jacqui Bergman, chair of the Department of Management, to complete the departmental leadership team in the Walker College.

Cherry and Stoddard have both served in key roles for the college in recent years and Drs. Bergman, Davé, Goff and Roberts’ experience is invaluable in continuing our mission of delivering transformational educational experiences."

Todd CherryTodd Cherry, a professor of economics, has been named chair of the Department of Economics.

Cherry has been a member of Appalachian’s faculty since 2001, most recently serving as director of the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (CERPA) and as a research fellow to the Appalachian Energy Center. Cherry’s research on the behavioral responses to public policy has been widely published in economics and interdisciplinary journals, and he is a senior research fellow at CICERO Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo, Norway, and a former Rasmuson Chairholder in Economics at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Cherry earned Sywassink Awards for Excellence in Research and Service in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wyoming.

Cherry will fill the role vacated by John Whitehead, who has served as chair of the department since 2009. Whitehead will return to a full-time faculty role in the department.

James StoddardJames Stoddard, a professor of marketing, has been named chair in the Department of Marketing.

Before joining the faculty at Appalachian in 1998, Stoddard held faculty positions at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the University of New Hampshire. He has taught at the undergraduate, graduate and executive development levels and has consulted with profit and nonprofit organizations. At Appalachian, Stoddard has helped launch the Marketing Sales program and is a key member of the college’s strategic planning committee as well as a member of the college’s online course task force. Stoddard holds his doctorate degree in Marketing from Virginia Tech.

Stoddard takes the reins from Mike Dotson, who served as interim chair of the Marketing Department and will return to his full-time faculty role in the department.

Dinesh DaveDinesh Davé, a professor of supply chain management, has been named chair of the Department of Computer Information Systems and Supply Chain Management.

Davé joined the Walker College of Business faculty in 1988 and has been instrumental in developing all aspects of Appalachian's Supply Chain Management program. Active in research, service and teaching, Davé received the Walker College's Sywassink Award for Excellence in Service in 2015 and in 2009, the Sywassink Award for Excellence in Research in 1996 and the college's Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Davé holds a Ph.D. in statistics from Gujarat University in India.

Delbert GoffDelbert Goff, a professor of finance, has been named chair of the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance.

Goff, who joined the faculty at Appalachian in 1991, has previously served as department chair during his tenure and has served as interim chair since July 2016. Goff was instrumental in creating the Bowden Investment Group (BIG) and in fundraising for the student managed investment account. He serves as instructor and advisor to the BIG, and received the Walker College's Sywassink Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997. Goff is an active researcher in the area of corporate finance and investments. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Florida State University.

Doug RobertsDoug Roberts, a professor of accounting, has been named chair of the Department of Accounting.

Roberts, who joined the faculty at Appalachian in 2002, has served as acting then interim chair of the Accounting Department since 2014. Through his work as accounting internship director (2007-2016), Roberts has organized recruiting events and supervised the placement of hundreds of students in internship experiences. He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Tennessee.

Jacqui BergmanJacqui Bergman, an associate professor of management, will continue to serve as chair of the Department of Marketing.

Bergman joined the faculty at Appalachian in 2005 and has served as department chair since 2012. She also serves on the college’s admission and recruitment committee, the executive education task force and the dean’s club research grants subcommittee. Bergman holds a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee.
