Undergraduate and and MBA students in the Walker College of Business were certified this semester as Emerging Leaders by executives from BB&T Leadership Institute.
Hosted by the Walker College of Business BB&T Student Leadership Center, the event offered 80 students the opportunity to complete two modules with BB&T executives. Brittany Brown, Assistant Vice President and Manager, Student Leadership Programs Manager for the BB&T Leadership Institute and Institute Fellow Jasmine Frinks provided the two-day training, which took place in March.
Participants earned the Leaders Aren't Born and the What's Your Strategy? certifications. During the first module, Leaders Aren't Born, students learned how beliefs drive leadership behaviors – both positively and negatively, and gained a better understanding of how they can lead others more effectively. They received practical tools and strategies to overcome leadership blind spots and produce results. The second module, What's Your Strategy, offered participants insight into their own personal style of leadership (director, coach, problem solver) and taught them to intentionally balance all three strategies to utilize the right approach for the situation at hand.
About The BB&T Leadership Institute
The BB&T Leadership Institute's mission includes the desire to expand the learning experiences of the next generation of leaders by supporting and creating awareness of leadership concepts. The BB&T Leadership Institute began as Farr Associates, a firm founded in 1956 by Dr. James Farr, a pioneer in the application of psychological principles to leadership development. For more than three decades, he led the process of consulting with top companies and teaching several generations of executives and managers that in order to lead others, they must first understand and be able to lead themselves to achieve business results. In 1994, Farr Associates joined its expertise with BB&T's leadership knowledge and know how. With the 2014 formation of The BB&T Leadership Institute, BB&T has decided to take key components of the leadership curriculum and make them available to emerging leaders in colleges and universities throughout our footprint.
