Jim Westerman to serve as director of business sustainability

Dr. Jim Westerman has been named director of business sustainability and resilience in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. 

Westerman, a professor in the Department of Management, joined App State’s faculty in 2005.

Westerman holds the college’s James E. Holshouser Distinguished Professorship in Ethics and has previously led the college’s Sustainability Steering Committee. He has represented the Department of Management as a member of App State’s Faculty Senate and currently serves as chair of the Faculty Senate. 

“Dr. Westerman has been a leader and a champion of sustainability in business education,” said Dr. Sandra Vannoy, dean of the Walker College of Business. “His passion, leadership, and deep expertise make him the ideal person to guide our college’s efforts in building a more resilient and responsible future.”

Westerman is a four-time recipient of Sywassink Awards for Excellence, having won in 2009 for research, in 2012 for teaching, and in 2024 for both service and the Spirit of Walker.

Westerman holds a Bachelor of Science in finance and an MBA from Florida State University and a PhD in management from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
