Kimberly Shellman '25 — Combining technical expertise and creativity to make her own way

After earning her industrial engineering degree from Clemson University with an emphasis in computing, and with both her parents teaching at Appalachian State University, Kimberly Shellman carved her own path in a familiar territory, bringing a passion for sustainability and data analytics to the Walker College of Business.

Kimberly decided to pursue her graduate studies at App State, earning a Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics with a focus on sustainability analytics.

Kimberly’s technical skills, coupled with creativity honed during her experience in the Disney College Program, provide a unique approach to projects, whether it be Python programming, AI research, or general problem-solving. As a graduate research assistant in the Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS), she examined the global use of AI-generated images, their legal implications, and detection methods. “Working with Dr. (Ed) Hassler on research I had never known about before pushed me out of my comfort zone,” she said.

“Whatever scares you, do it,” said Kimberly, understanding that growth comes from pushing one's own boundaries.

Kimberly credits her parents for her willingness to step outside the box and for inspiring her journey. “They’ve always been kind, encouraging, and hardworking,” said Kimberly. Dr. Mark Shellman specializes in programming languages, data science, and cybersecurity, and Dr. Donna Sue Shellman, teaching primarily on the Hickory campus, focuses on student success and fostering lifelong learning. Both are CIS faculty.

Looking ahead, Kimberly plans to combine her technical expertise with creativity to “help make magic” at The Walt Disney Company. Her best advice for future Mountaineers is to count on your family and friends. “Don’t be scared to make friends; there are always friends waiting for you out there,” she said.

Kimberly’s story reflects the Walker College’s commitment to providing foundational business knowledge so graduates can use business for good in a rapidly changing world. Kimberly is one of 399 December 2025 graduates of the Walker College of Business.
