Marketing professor offers advice on photo credit cards

Expert advice from Dr. Pia A. Albinsson, Beroth Professorship of Marketing in Appalachian State University's Department of Marketing & Supply Chain Management, was recently featured in a WalletHub piece about Photo Credit Cards.

Here's what Dr. Albinsson had to say:

Why doesn’t every credit card company let you add a custom photo to your card?
Printing a personalized photo on each customer’s credit card can be costly and require additional equipment. Some credit card companies and financial institutions allow the first card with a photo for free but then subsequent cards or a change of photo comes with a fee. Perhaps more credit card companies will offer a photo as an option for a fee in the future.

Is a photo credit card just a novelty?
Cards with photos have been available for quite some time, it does add an extra layer of safety if merchants are checking the card. A photo can make the customer feel a sense of psychological ownership and connection to the card, which may help the customer with their budgeted purchases.

Can having a photo on your credit card help prevent fraud?
As mentioned, if merchants check the card for likeness the photo can add an extra layer of safety. However, so many of today’s transactions occur through contactless payments or online that very few merchants check for identification or that the name or photo matches the individual.
