Meredith Pipes to serve as director of global engagement

Meredith Pipes has been named director of global engagement in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. She will also serve as program director for the International Business major.

Pipes has worked in international education for more than 20 years, bringing extensive expertise in global program management, student development, and curriculum design to the role. 

Pipes has organized and managed immersive study abroad programs to Costa Rica, France, Cuba, Mexico and Malawi. She has also co-led programs in Turkey, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Belize, and the Dominican Republic.  

Most recently serving as global and civic engagement specialist for the Walker College, Pipes has served as academic advisor to international business majors and all business students studying abroad.

“Ms. Pipes has been a driving force behind the college’s international efforts for many years,” said Dr. Sandra Vannoy, dean of the Walker College of Business. “Her dedication to creating immersive, real-world learning experiences has opened doors for our students to engage meaningfully with the world and grow as globally minded professionals.”

Pipes also brings experience in cross-disciplinary teaching and culture-centered research, including an investigation on the impacts of study abroad on students’ sense of social responsibility and empowerment to make positive change. 

Pipes holds a master’s in Latin American Studies from the University of Kansas and is a 2001 alumna of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.
