QM course certification brings App State Online MBA goal into sharper focus

Dr. Steven Leon, an associate professor of supply chain management at Appalachian State University, has attained Quality Matters (QM) course certification for MBA 5220: Operations and Supply Chain Management.

QM is a nationally recognized, faculty-driven peer-review process used to ensure the quality of online and blended course design. MBA 5220 is the fourth QM-certified course in the Walker College of Business and the thirteenth at Appalachian, making the Walker College home to about one third of the university's QM-certified course offerings.

"The commitment of Dr. Leon and all our graduate faculty to our MBA program is phenomenal," said Walker College Interim Dean Sandra Vannoy. "Their work is ensuring the highest quality of Appalachian education for every future student of the program."

Each instructure has collaborated with Appalachian's Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), which offers the opportunity to up to six faculty members each year with a goal to rethink, redesign and apply online pedagogy in the design and development of a high-quality online course.

Vannoy said that "the work of Greg SimmonsEmory Maiden and their CAE team has been instrumental" in supporting her goal of a fully QM-certified MBA program.

Their work and Dr. Leon's success brings the goal into sharper focus.

"Those of us in CAE are thrilled by the continued progress toward the WCOB's goals," replied Simmons.

MBA 5220 provides students in-depth knowledge of the transformation of materials and other inputs into products and services. Operations and supply chain management is a primary function for both manufacturing and service businesses, aligning closely with marketing, finance and accounting, engineering and other functions to develop and implement strategic and business plans. Industry objectives include the production of high-quality products and services to satisfy customer requirements at competitive prices, while effectively utilizing a number of different resources, such as employees, equipment, facilities and information systems.
