Appalachian State University senior Madison Browne has won first place in the 2021 Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Society student competition.
The CPCU Society is a global, nonprofit membership association for risk management and insurance industry professionals.
Browne, a risk management and insurance and finance double major in the Walker College of Business, competed against 30+ students, beating out students from the University of Maryland and the University of North Texas in the final, presentation round.
The students planned how the insurance industry can mitigate climate change. Browne presented and elaborated on two primary ways in which the industry can mitigate future risks through internal risk reduction: (1) educating insurance consumers on the implications climate change has for loss impacts, insurance prices and risk controls; and (2) leading the global charge to better understand the underlying risks and their correlations through improvements in risk modeling.
