Sean Owens’ graduate experience at Appalachian State University is a continuation of a lifelong theme: curiosity.
Sean brought to App State’s Walker College of Business a diverse educational background: have earned associate degree in Chinese Mandarin and military intelligence, and bachelor’s degrees in communications and theatre performance.
Now, he is among the first students to earn a Master of Business Administration from App State with a concentration in artificial intelligence, following the launch of the university’s AI tracks in 2025.
Sean’s passion for learning is rooted in his love of travel and exploration. Having visited nearly every U.S. state and more than two dozen countries, he values opportunities to connect with people across cultures and observe both the similarities and differences of communities around the world.
One of the most defining experiences in Sean’s life came in 2019, when he deployed to Afghanistan with the Joint Special Operations Command. That experience reinforced the importance of discipline, dedication and surrounding oneself with people who are striving to improve. It shaped his belief that sustained effort and strong communities are essential for growth.
Sean credits his wife as his greatest source of inspiration. “She works harder than anyone I know, and she constantly motivates me to be better than I was before.”
At the Walker College, Owens found professors who consistently encouraged forward-looking thinking.
“They encouraged us to consider how the world will change in the coming years... how AI is changing the fields we’re entering and helping us learn to use it,” Sean said.
His professors’ focus on artificial intelligence and real-world application underscored a shared commitment to student success beyond graduation.
Summing up his college experience, Owens reflects on the idea that “curiosity is more important than knowledge.” His advice to new students is to say yes to opportunities, especially those that feel challenging.
Sean plans to work with organizations centered on global good, beginning with his role as a project manager with a green company focused on solar innovation. He’ll take with him an appreciation for the people and cultures that have shaped his path, including his fellow Mountaineers.
Sean Owens is one of approximately 1,000 Spring and Summer 2026 graduates of the Walker College of Business. Read more student stories: business.appstate.edu/news/students.
