Seven-part professional development series for business students to be held virtually for Fall 2020

Business Career Services in the BB&T Student Leadership Center, housed in Appalachian State University's Walker College of Business, will present a seven-part professional development series for the Fall 2020 semester.

Each event will be offered virtually and will focus on career, professional and leadership development advice. Dates and topics are as follows.

September 1: Remote Recruitment 

Presented by Annie Love
With a record number of employees working remotely, the landscape for recruiting and hiring has also changed dramatically. Join Business Career Services for a workshop that will walk you through a recruiter's perspective of remote recruiting and hiring for virtual positions and internships. From the job search to researching for your virtual interview - we've got you covered with some pointers and inside perspectives.

September 8: Networking & Online Etiquette

Presented by Amy Odom
Networking is essential to expanding professional opportunities especially when you are actively searching for an internship or full time position. Business Career Services will walk you through the different types of networking and how to create quality contacts that will help launch your career in person and online. To help you be pandemic prepared- Business Career Services will do a deep dive into online etiquette in a virtual networking environment.

September 15: Virtual Interviews

Presented by Maureen Cathey
Preparing for interviews is a key step in the internship and job search process. The thought of interviewing can be more intimidating than it needs to be if you are not sure what to expect or how to prepare. This workshop will address preparation and tips for successful video and virtual interviewing.

September 22: How to work a Virtual Career Fair

Are you worried about attending your first VIRTUAL career fair? Join a variety of recruiters from various industries as they provide best practices and strategies of how to successfully make the most of your virtual career fair! Prepare for a panel discussion and bring your top questions and concerns to be answered by the experts!

October 6: Virtual Internships

Presented by Veronica Lozano-Toub
Are you curious about what a virtual internship is like? Come hear from student and employer panelists who have experienced them. Panelists will talk about the challenges and benefits of virtual internships and you can ask them questions!

October 13: LinkedIn

Presented by Amy Odom
With a new focus on remote and virtual recruitment, more and more employers are relying on LinkedIn to find and connect with candidates. According to Cnet.com, 93% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find qualified candidates. Join Business Career Services as we walk you through how to create a perfect LinkedIn Profile. You will be ready to impress after an evening of helpful tips, tricks and industry standards needed for a perfect LinkedIn profile.

October 20: Salary Negotiation

Presented by Maureen Cathey
Feeling nervous about salary negotiations and if you should even try? Learn negotiation strategies and tips including evaluating compensation as a whole package that includes salary, benefits and other perks.

How to participate

Each hour-long event will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. by Zoom.

All business students, regardless of major, are encouraged to join one or more sessions, as the series covers a variety of topics designed to help business students 'land the job' and prepare for a successful and fulfilling career after college. No registration is required, and there is no fee to participate.

About the BB&T Student Leadership Center

The BB&T Student Leadership Center provides opportunities for business students to build career skills through professional and leadership development training.
