Students 'excel' on Rocky Top

Students from Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 5 to participate in Excel on Rocky Top 2025, a Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge (MECC) Regional competition.

The students are:

  • Sarah Bergin (Accounting)
  • Ella Fabion (Marketing)
  • Amelia Griffith (Finance & Banking)
  • Hailey Martin (MS Applied Data Analytics and CIS graduate)
  • Ashley Meacham (Accounting and Finance & Banking)
  • Connor Perdue (Finance & Banking)
  • Enzo Ramos (Economics and Finance & Banking)

They competed in four rounds of competition and earned third place overall in the highest division (Varsity).

Enzo Ramos finished among the top four students overall.

In the Junior Varsity division, Connor Perdue notched a high score in the division’s data case round.

“The team aspect of competing in Knoxville alongside my peers was an exciting way to build a sense of belonging and achievement,” said Meacham. “We had a great time banding together and combining our specialties to secure a top-three ranking.”

Faculty members Tori Humler (Computer Information Systems) and Dr. Chris McNeil (Finance, Banking & Insurance) accompanied the students.

“It was a great event,” said McNeil. “We connected with students and faculty from six other universities and participated in masterclasses led by experts. These MECC events build valuable skills and offer students an opportunity to stand out among their peers.”

“The Tennessee experience was truly inspirational and exciting,” said Bergin. “I highly suggest participating; it’s the best time I’ve had so far at App!”

The Walker College coordinates regular student competitions to grow students' Excel skills. The MECC 2025 Finals are in Las Vegas in early December.
