On March 24, rapid keystrokes and the hum of analytical thinking marked the Walker College of Business Excel Challenge.
The event tests Appalachian State University students' proficiency in data manipulation, complex formulas, and problem-solving — indispensable skills in today’s data-driven professional landscape.
Top Performers - Graduate / Upperclass Division
The upperclassmen/graduate division saw a fierce battle for the top spot, with one at the top and two in a rare tie for second place. All were repeat top performers from Fall 2025. The Walker College's Dean’s Office supported the event by providing prizes.
- 1st Place: Avery Clark, Marketing ($150)
- 2nd Place (Tie): Ben Blau, Accounting ($100)
- 2nd Place (Tie): Conner Perdue, Finance & Banking / MBA ($100)
Top Performers - Freshman / Sophomore Division
The underclassmen division demonstrated that the future of business analytics is in capable hands.
- 1st Place: Graham Gainey, International Business ($150)
- 2nd Place: Aadya Adiga, Computer Information Systems ($100)
- 3rd Place (Tie): Cora Hungerford, Accounting, Finance & Banking ($50)
- 3rd Place (Tie): Emma Klotz, Accounting ($50)
Bridging the Gap Between Classroom and Career
"The Excel Challenge is more than just a contest; it's a competitive bridge to the professional world," said co-organizer Tori Humler (Computer Information Systems). “This event is all about challenging our students and building problem-solving and Excel skills with a fun activity.”
Chris McNeil (Finance, Banking & Insurance) added, "We are incredibly proud of all the participants. The speed and accuracy displayed by these students, especially under time pressure, is exactly what employers are looking for in our graduates."
Upcoming Competitions
Mark your calendars for the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge (MECC), an exciting team event on Thursday, April 23, at 7:30pm in Peacock 2015, where App State will compete against other universities. All Excel skill levels are welcome. Interested students can join by visiting a special AsULearn site.
