Uriel Rivera Herrara '25 — From uncertainty to leadership through the Martha Guy Fellowship

When Uriel Rivera Herrera walked across the stage as a December 2025 graduate of Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, he carried more than a diploma. He carried a story of resilience, responsibility, and transformation.

Uriel didn’t always envision himself in college. In fact, he didn’t know where to begin. “I didn’t know how to apply,” he said. But a conversation with his brother changed everything: ‘Someone needs to go to college.’ That simple statement sparked a determination that led Uriel to work, save, and ultimately pursue higher education.

As a first-generation student, Uriel found his way at App State in part through the Martha Guy Fellowship, a program designed to empower future business leaders. Joining the fellowship’s second cohort, Uriel discovered more than academic opportunity. He found community, connection, and confidence.

Compared to his experience at community college, App State offered something deeper: strong bonds with peers, mentors, and the professional community. “Networking is amazing—when you least expect it, someone wants to help you,” Uriel says. “You have to network. Talk to the person beside you on the bus. Learn from their background.”

With the Martha Guy Fellows, Uriel visited Ally Financial, presented to the Walker College of Business Advisory Council, and connected with alumni who reinforced the power of relationships in the business world. These experiences didn’t just expand his network—they changed him. “Networking changes how you communicate, your openness, and your willingness to engage,” he explains.

Uriel’s journey also reflects personal growth. As an older brother, he felt a deep sense of responsibility. “I told myself, ‘Your siblings are watching.’ Now that I’ve been to college, my siblings are applying, too!”

Uriel’s success has become a beacon for his family and community, proving that education has a ripple effect, inspiring others to dream bigger.

Today, Uriel advocates for higher education, sharing his story to encourage others to take the leap. His message is clear: asking for help is a strength, and opportunities often begin with a conversation.
