Dr. David Marlett and Emily Marlett of Appalachian State University's Walker College of Business led a group of ten students on a study abroad trip to Bermuda on May 12-19. The travel was as part of the FIN 4800 International Insurance Markets class. While in Bermuda, the students learned about reinsurance markets, risk models, and the regulatory system, and the students also participated in sustainability projects.
The program started at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). At BIOS, Dr. Mark Guishard of the Risk Prediction Initiative presented on catastrophic risk modeling and discussed the potential impact of a changing climate. The students learned how changing ocean conditions can impact severe weather events, and how reinsurers analyze the changing climate conditions to predict future losses. "Insurers and governmental insurance programs purchase reinsurance to help finance claim payments after a disaster," explained Marlett. "These payments allow property owners to rebuild and the community to recover."
