Management professor's research on entrepreneurship to be published in Organizational Research Methods

Research on entrepreneurship research methods from Walker College of Business Management Professor Dan Hsu has been accepted for publication in Organizational Research Methods (ORM), a peer-reviewed, quarterly publication ranked second out of 79 applied psychology journals and ninth out of 192 management by Journal Citation Reports.

The work, co-authored by Saron Simmons at University of Missouri - Kansas City and Alice Wieland at University of Nevada, Reno, is entitled "Designing Entrepreneurship Experiments: A Review, Typology, and Research Agenda." The publication brings relevant developments of the experimental methodology to a wide range of researchers interested in studying entrepreneurs and promotes a more effective understanding of the methodology and its application in entrepreneurship settings.
The paper discusses the current and potential application of experimental methods to the study of entrepreneurship phenomena. Drawing upon a review of experimental studies in entrepreneurship research, the researchers discuss the advantages and disadvantages of experimental research designs for entrepreneurship research as a primer for those interested but not overly familiar with these methods. To advance research agendas and theory in the field, the paper introduces a typology of experimental manipulations that highlight alternative design choices based on the nature of their participant impact and realism of context. Finally, the paper provides an overview of areas of opportunity within the entrepreneurship literature for application of methods best suited to provide greater insight into the causal mechanisms at play.
Hsu’s research focuses on entrepreneurs’ wellbeing, serial entrepreneurs, and the experimental method. He has published in Financial Times Top Business Journals such as Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.
