Walker College of Business students participated in the Institute for Supply Management Carolinas-Virginia Chapter's Spring Conference Student Case Competition March 8-9 in Charlotte, NC.
The Appalachian State University students are supply chain management major and Chinese minor Emily Turner and computer information systems major and supply chain management minor Josh Conner. They were accompanied by their faculty advisor, Beth Ellington, a professor of computer information systems and supply chain management.
The Appalachian students competed against teams from UNC Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth University and The Citadel, and they came away with second place.
The teams were given a case at 7:30 PM on Thursday evening for which to find and submit solution by 11:30 AM on Friday. Each group then presented their solution to conference attendees as well as a panel of four supply chain management professionals who served as judges. Charlotte City Councilman James Mitchell, Jr. spoke at the event reception.
The case focused on world trade and local opportunity for economic development. The conference, the fourth annual of its kind, aimed to provide simulated, real world experience for emerging leaders in procurement and supply chain management.
Students in Appalachian's Walker College are encouraged to participate in regional, national and global competitions as a method of experiential learning. These experiences help students practice their discipline and test their knowledge and ability against peers. The Walker College boasts a long tradition of competing in–and winning–events in every business discipline.
