Dr. Rachel Shinnar has been named assistant chair of the Department of Management in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. Dr. Shinnar is an associate professor in the department.
In her new role, Dr. Shinnar will serve under Dr. Heather Dixon- Fowler, who chairs the department. As assistant chair, Dr. Shinnar will be a representative for the department and help committees achieve both short-term and long-term objectives. She will also assist with departmental advising for students who need guidance in the field of management.
Dr. Shinnar joined Appalachian's faculty in 2004 and, as a professor, has provided opportunities for students to participate in real-world experiences inside and outside of the classroom, including serving as faculty leader for study abroad excursions to Cuba. Dr. Shinnar has taught organization behavior, contemporary issues in management and leadership, as well as international human resource management at Appalachian.
Her research interests center around upward mobility for Hispanic immigrants in their respective careers and entrepreneurship education for minorities and females.
Dr. Shinnar holds an M.S. and a Ph.D from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and earned a B.A. from Tel Aviv University in Israel.

Dr. Shinnar joins a 12-person executive leadership team in the Walker College, including Dean Heather Norris, associate deans Sam Formby, Martin Meznar and Sandra Vannoy, and chairpersons for six academic departments.
The Department of Management is the largest department in the college, and the only area that requires an assistant chairperson.
The Department of Management offers two undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree programs: a major in Management (MGT) and a major in Hospitality and Tourism Management (HOS). Minors in the department for both business and non-business majors include: entrepreneurship, human resource management, and sustainable business.
For individuals considering graduate level courses, the Department of Management offers a Master of Arts degree program in cooperation with the Department of Psychology for Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management (IOHRM).
