UPLIFT, short for Understanding, Planning, Linking, Innovating, Financing, and Talent, is a nonprofit initiative that launched in 2021 to empower small tourism destinations through strategic guidance, marketing tools, and mentorship.
The program, co-led by Dr. Carol Kline, a professor in Appalachian State University's Department of Management and director of its Hospitality & Tourism Management program, is helping transform rural tourism across North Carolina.

The UPLIFT program is a community-driven initiative supported by the American Rescue Plan Act, designed to strengthen rural tourism in North Carolina. By working across county borders, UPLIFT supports local tourism leaders and practitioners in realizing their vision for tourism in their communities. The program aims to address the impact of COVID-19 on the hospitality, tourism, and outdoor recreation industries. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree with a major in Hospitality and Tourism Management may be obtained by completion of the Walker College of Business core courses, core required HOS courses, and internship.
