Belong. Explore. Become.
The Martha Guy Business for Good Fellowship is a community for first-generation transfer students in the Walker College of Business.
College can feel especially challenging when you are transferring to a new university, navigating unfamiliar expectations, and figuring out your next steps without a family roadmap to follow. You don't have to do it alone.
As a Martha Guy Fellow, you will join a close-knit community of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and business professionals who are invested in your success. Through meaningful experiences, personal coaching, professional development, travel, and service, you will build the confidence, relationships, and skills needed to make the most of your time at App State and prepare for what comes next.
You don't have your future completely figured out. You only need to be willing to show up, participate, support others, and grow.
"I found not only advisors through this program, but people I will forever remember and hold near and dear to my heart." — Jack Dorta, Marketing–Professional Sales, Class of 2026

What Is a First-Generation College Student?
For purposes of the Fellowship, a first-generation college student is generally someone whose parent or legal guardian has not completed a four-year bachelor’s degree.
Students sometimes assume they do not qualify because a sibling attended college, a parent completed some college, or another family member earned a degree. Those circumstances do not necessarily prevent you from being considered. Contact us if you are uncertain about your eligibility.

About Martha Guy
Dr. Martha Guy (1922-2019) was an icon and a pioneer for women in the banking industry. A native of Newland, Guy served and led Avery County Bank for more than 60 years in every capacity from assistant cashier to president. She was inducted into the North Carolina Banking Hall of Fame in 2010 and has been honored by the North Carolina Bankers Association with its Legends in Banking Award. In 2011, Guy received App State's Honorary Alumni Award.
Guy earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill and an associate degree from Lees-McRae College. After firmly establishing her banking career, Guy emerged as a community leader and benefactor. She served on the boards of the Crossnore School and received a governor's appointment to the Avery County Board of Education during the turbulent period of school integration.
Guy's leadership of and service to higher education have reached throughout the North Carolina Mountains. She served as a founding trustee of Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine and on the boards of directors and visitors for App State, Lees-McRae, Mars Hill College, Montreat College, and Warren Wilson College. Guy also generously contributed her resources to higher education, helping to found App State's Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders, which operated from 2004 until 2019.
