Student researchers take top spots during poster session on sustainable business

Five student teams have been selected as best research project winners via faculty vote following a poster session on sustainable business research at Appalachian State University.

Zapp Cab parked at LegendsThe top poster was "Zapp-Cab Electric Vehicle Transportation Service in Boone, NC" by Bailey Winecoff, Caleb McGee, Spencer Carmichael, Michael Jennings, and Richard Oakley.

According to their poster:

Zapp-Cab is unlike any taxi company you have been introduced to before. Run by a small student team, Zapp-Cab has taken transportation in Boone to a new level by providing high quality, around the clock service. Zapp-Cab is not only providing an economic service by increasing traffic to local businesses but also a social service by giving rides to those that need it most. Many customers we serve may have not otherwise reached their destination. Whether handicap or homeless Zapp-Cab is committed to serving the community. We at Zapp-Cab realize our country's dependence on fossil fuels and their environmental impact. That is why we use exclusively electric vehicles to provide clean quality transportation services that reduce our carbon footprint on earth.

The second place poster was "Greenwheels" by student researchers Elena Avis, Nicole Gratzl, and Allison Martin (pictured).

According to the poster:

Greenwheels is a food truck serving the Appalachian State University campus. We offer organic pizzas, sandwiches, and more all made with local ingredients. Many vegetarian and vegan options are also available! We are committed to producing zero waste by serving our food in compostable containers. Our truck runs on biofuel and our kitchen is powered entirely by solar energy!

There was a three-way tie for third place research between "Come Back Shack: A Sustainable Expansion", "Barberitos: Further than 'Farm Fresh"' and "Attacking Food Waste at Appalachian".

The poster session took place Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Peacock Hall.

The research topics focus on environmental and social concerns, business strategies and practices, and new opportunities to create value for all of an organization's stakeholders. The research relates to academic institutions, non-profit entities, and local and national businesses.
