Research Grants

Barnes Program Student Research Grants

Barnes Program Student Research Grants are funded by the Lee Barnes Benefaction for Learning Enhancement and Enrichment and provide business students with up to $1000 to research with a faculty mentor outside of the typical classroom experience. The research may take place in a formal setting, such as hourly work as a research assistant or during a one-hour independent study course, or in less formal settings, such as a student club activity.

Student research projects may lead to poster or oral presentations by the student at on- and off-campus conferences and/or papers co-authored by the student and a faculty mentor that may be submitted for publication in a professional or academic outlet.

Examples of acceptable expenditures include online survey panels, experimental subject payments, and travel for qualitative (e.g., interviews) or quantitative (e.g., on-site surveys) data collection. Research assistantships are available for up to $1000 (approximately 67 hours at $15/hour), similar to those funded by the Office of Student Research (OSR). The grant funds are primarily intended for research and data collection. Part of the funding may be used to help support travel related to presenting research from the project; however, students with travel requests for conferences should first seek travel funds from OSR .

Proposal deadlines for the 2024-2025 academic year are October 4 and February 21. A Walker College of Business faculty committee evaluates each proposal. Decisions are based on the quality of the proposal, dissemination plan, and availability of funds.

Students should present their work at a Walker College of Business research poster session and, if possible, at the Annual Celebration of Student Research and Creative Endeavors at Appalachian. At the completion of the research, faculty mentors are asked to submit a final report explaining how the award was used. Grantees are asked to acknowledge the Barnes Program Student Research Grant on any presentations or publications that result from the research conducted through the grant.
