The Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) will host The Value of a Tree, a one-day conference to bridge the gaps in understanding and expand our collective knowledge about trees, on Saturday, September 24.
Held in the Plemmons Student Union on the campus of Appalachian State University, the event will explore the value of trees to people and the roles that wood and forests play in our lives, in the lives of other creatures, and how these interact. Participants will hear from international experts with a wide range of viewpoints. Speakers include:
- Virginia Dale, Corporate Fellow, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
- Linda Heath, Director of Inventory, Monitoring and Assessment Research, United State Forest Service
- Kristian Jackson, Senior Instructor of Recreation Management, Appalachian State University
- Tom Johnson, Managing Director, Timberland Investment Resources
- Ash Morgan, Assistant Director, ASU Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis
- Howard Neufeld, Professor of Biology, Appalachian State University
- Rick Van Noy, Author and Professor of English, Radford University

The event is free and lunch is provided for registrants. However, space is limited, and online registration is required.
About RIEEE and CERPA
Appalachian's Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) was established in November 2008 to enhance opportunities for faculty and students whose research interests involve the environment, energy and economics and especially intersections thereof. We do this by supporting interdisciplinary research clusters, fostering beneficial collaborations and associations, funding student research grants and offering post-award grants management for funded projects.
The Institute serves as an umbrella organization for three centers including the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (CERPA), housed in the Walker College of Business' Department of Economics. CERPA aims to improve policy and decision-making by producing rigorous research and disseminating relevant information on current economic and policy issues. To that end, CERPA maintains research programs in the specific areas of economic development, environment and energy, and experimental economics.
