Ten Appalachian State University students traveled to Anaheim, CA August 3-5 to participate in the national Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) annual meeting.
The students, members of the leadership team for Appalachian's BAP chapter, were accompanied by Professor of Accounting Tracy Reed, who serves as faculty advisor to the group.
As part of the national event, the officers participated in an International Day of Literacy.
In partnership with KPMG and the KPMG Foundation, accounting, finance, and information systems students from around the world visited elementary schools in underserved neighborhoods to engage kindergarten through fifth graders in hands on learning experiences, demonstrating the importance of literacy in their lives. The day of literacy was held in collaboration with Orange County United Way and the nonprofit organization First Book, and allowed each elementary student to leave with their very own book.
"We are excited to bring back ideas and connections from the meeting to better serve our members on campus," said Appalachian BAP President Emily Young.

Beta Alpha Psi students were also participants in the Walker College of Business 2017 Day of Service, which brought financial literacy activities to eigth grade classes in Ashe and Wilkes Counties.
In addition to the community service event, the Appalachian students networked with other chapter members and leaders in the industry, attending sessions on industry trends, such as the role of technology in the future of accounting.
Since Appalachian's team had presented at the regional meeting in February, they were invited to present during the national event. They presented methods for how their chapter manages growth.

"Our officers did a great job with our fundraising efforts," said Young. "We are also very grateful for the generosity of the Department of Accounting, whose support allowed us to take all of eligible officers."
