Three professors in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University have earned Dean’s Club Research Prizes for high impact and innovative scholarly work.
The professors, pictured from left, are Dr. David Dickinson, Dr. Dennis Guignet, and Dr. Brandy Hadley. Each earns the prize for the second time during their tenure at App State.
The Dean’s Club Research Prize recognizes and rewards innovative business research at App State that reflects the Walker College mission, vision and values, while aligning with the UN 17 sustainable development goals.
First Prize: Property Values, Water Quality, and Benefit Transfer: A Nationwide Meta-Analysis
Dr. Dennis Guignet, an assistant professor in the Department of Economics, earned first place and a $5,000 prize for his research paper Property Values, Water Quality, and Benefit Transfer: A Nationwide Meta-Analysis.
Co-authored by Guignet, Matthew Heberling, Michael Papenfus and Olivia Griot, the paper utilizes studies that examine the effects of water quality on housing values in the United States.
The paper was Land Economics 'most read' article of 2022.
Guignet is the first to win the top Dean's Club research prize two times, having first earned the prize in 2020.

Sleep restriction increases coordination failure
Dr. David Dickinson, a professor in the Department of Economics, earned a $2,500 prize for his paper, Sleep restriction increases coordination failure, which was published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
The paper examines the importance of sleep, and Dickinson has maintained a long-term research program on the effects of sleep (in particular, insufficient sleep) on decision-making.
Dickinson earned his first Dean's Club Research Prize in 2019.
When CEOs Adapt: An Investigation of Manager Experience, Policy and Performance Following Recessions
A $2,500 prize was also awarded to Dr. Brandy Hadley, an associate professor in the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance.
Hadley's paper, When CEOs Adapt: An Investigation of Manager Experience, Policy and Performance Following Recessions, was co-authored by Dr. Brian Blank and published in the Journal of Corporate Finance.
The researchers examine changes in corporate policies following recessions during CEO tenures to evaluate the value of learning. Learn more.
Hadley earned her first Dean's Club Research Prize in 2020.

The winners are selected by an interdisciplinary committee of business faculty and a member of the Business Advisory Council.

About Faculty Research in the Walker College of Business
The Walker College faculty produce and disseminate extensive research through both academic and professional communities. In the last five years, faculty have published 543 peer reviewed academic journal articles, 160 conference proceedings, and made 533 conference and professional presentations. In total, faculty have produced 1,175 intellectual contributions in the last five years. Approximately 520 intellectual contributions were made in basic or discovery research, 540 in applied or integrative research, and 115 contributions in teaching and learning research.
